Muskrat is a hairy philosopher with a mustache and long whiskers. He is very serious and prefers to keep to himself. When Moomintroll builds a bridge over the river, he accidentally destroys the muskrats' home. So he moves in with the Moomintrolls. Muskrat likes to lie in the family hammock and read his favorite book: The Uselessness of Everything. The worst thing he knows is losing his dignity, which unfortunately happens all too often in the Moominhouse. Muskrat later moves into Sniff's cave, where he is not disturbed by others.
